About this exam

The FINRA Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam is an entry-level exam covering basic knowledge of the U.S. securities industry. It is intended for people exploring or beginning careers in financial services, including university students considering roles in brokerage, investment banking, or securities operations. You do not need to be sponsored by a FINRA member firm to take it. Passing the SIE demonstrates foundational knowledge, but it does not by itself qualify you to work as a registered securities representative; additional qualification exams and firm sponsorship may be required.

SIE topics include capital markets and industry participants, securities offerings and underwriting, equity and debt products, investment risks, trading, customer accounts, prohibited activities, and the regulatory framework. The exam has 75 scored questions, plus 10 unscored pretest questions, and a 1-hour, 45-minute time limit. Preparation is more than memorizing terms: candidates need to distinguish similar products, connect market concepts to customer scenarios, and recognize regulatory responsibilities. Review FINRA’s current exam outline, then use focused topic review and practice questions to find and address weak areas.

How to prepare for the FINRA SIE Exam

  1. Use FINRA’s current SIE content outline to organize your study plan, and spend extra review time on securities products and risks, a substantial part of the exam.
  2. Compare common concepts side by side—for example, common versus preferred stock, corporate versus municipal bonds, and primary versus secondary markets—so you can apply distinctions in scenario-based questions.
  3. Take timed practice sessions and review every missed or guessed answer; use FINRA’s official exam information and outline to verify rules and keep your preparation aligned with the current exam.
