About this exam
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test for high school students in the United States. It gives students a chance to become familiar with SAT-style questions and serves as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students in different grades may take the exam, but the score from the junior year is generally the one considered for National Merit recognition. Meeting a score threshold does not guarantee an award; students must also satisfy program requirements and advance through its selection process.
The digital PSAT/NMSQT has two sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Reading and Writing questions assess skills such as central ideas and details, textual and quantitative evidence, inferences, words in context, and standard English conventions. Math includes areas such as algebra, advanced math, data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry. The test uses adaptive modules, so pacing and careful reading matter. Prepare by reviewing question types, practicing under timed conditions, and analyzing mistakes rather than relying on memorized answers.
How to prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT
- Review Reading and Writing skills, especially central ideas, evidence, inferences, and vocabulary in context; note why each incorrect option is unsupported.
- Practice timed sections and build a Math review plan around algebra, advanced math, data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry. Keep an error log and revisit the concepts behind missed questions.
- Use the College Board’s official PSAT/NMSQT information and practice materials to check the current digital format, tools, and test-day guidance for your school year.
