About this exam
The MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination is the first written examination in the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom diploma. It is taken by doctors aiming to progress towards physician training and specialist medical practice; passing Part 1 is required before moving on to later stages of the MRCP(UK) examination pathway. It assesses whether candidates can apply a broad base of medical knowledge, rather than testing one specialty alone. It is an important postgraduate assessment, but passing it does not guarantee a training post.
MRCP Part 1 consists of two papers, each with 100 best-of-five questions and a three-hour duration. The questions assess clinical sciences and knowledge of disorders across medicine. Key areas include cardiovascular medicine, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology, and renal medicine and electrolyte disorders. Preparation involves more than memorising facts: candidates need to recognise clinical patterns, interpret information and connect core science with diagnosis and management. Check the current MRCP(UK) regulations and candidate guidance for the arrangements that apply to your examination sitting.
How to prepare for MRCP(UK) Part 1
- Use the current MRCP(UK) Part 1 syllabus or blueprint to organise revision, making sure you cover clinical sciences as well as major specialties such as cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and renal medicine.
- Practise best-of-five questions under timed conditions. After each set, review why the correct option fits and why the alternatives do not, then revisit any weak topics.
- Use reliable clinical references and the official MRCP(UK) examination regulations and candidate guidance; check these again before applying because requirements and arrangements can change.
