About this exam
The NMC Test of Competence CBT (Adult Nursing) is a computer-based assessment for internationally educated nurses applying to join the Nursing and Midwifery Council register through the Test of Competence route. It assesses whether a candidate has the knowledge needed for safe adult nursing practice in the UK; it is not a general university admission test. The NMC reviews each application and confirms whether the applicant needs to complete the Test of Competence. Candidates should check current NMC guidance for the 2027–2028 cycle, as requirements can change.
The CBT covers numeracy and clinical knowledge. The standard format includes a numeracy section and a larger clinical section, with questions addressing safe, effective nursing care. Adult nursing revision should include comprehensive patient assessment and clinical judgement, infection prevention and control, medicines management, safe administration and medication dose calculations. Preparation is more than memorising facts: candidates need to interpret clinical situations, prioritise risks and apply relevant principles. Use the current NMC Test of Competence blueprint to guide revision, and review why an answer is safe rather than learning answer patterns.
How to prepare for the NMC Adult Nursing CBT
- Use the latest NMC Test of Competence CBT blueprint and candidate guidance to map the topics you need to review, then make a study plan around weaker areas.
- Practise dose calculations and clinical questions under timed conditions; after each session, review your reasoning, especially for assessment, infection control and medicines safety.
- Revise how to apply nursing principles to patient scenarios, including recognising deterioration and prioritising care, rather than relying only on memorised definitions.
